Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3721 Appeal against conscription of: William Arthur Tennant Age: 41 Address: Kirkgate, Middleham Occupation: Draper Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: Not stated Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative. Summary of case: Tennant was a draper and manufacturer of machine knitted hosiery employed also in the buying of wool. He had been granted a conditional exemption in 1916 but the military representative appealed to the local tribunal stating that the demand for men fit for general service is now so great that it would appear more to the national interest to serve his country and that there are ample staff to carry out the business in his absence. The local tribunal decided that the conditional certificate of exemption in force should be withdrawn and granted further temporary exemption to 24 August 1917 as a result of the review. The military representative objected to the temporary exemption and appealed to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal. They allowed the appeal, certificate to be withdrawn but not to be called up before 24 August 1917. Tennant then writes to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stating that he presumes that he has leave to appeal again to Northallerton as the point was not mentioned. Leave to appeal to the Central Tribunal was refused. Case papers include a letter from the War Department, Cloth Section stating that the man was considered by the Committee indispensable in the interest of the wool department in that district and recommending favourable consideration. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 21 June 1917. Allowed. Military appeal. Certificate to be cancelled. Man not to be called up before 24 Aug 1917 |
