Summary of case: At the local tribunal the military representative asked for the cases of the butchers to be ‘considered from the standpoint of public needs’. Case was adjourned for one month and then a conditional exemption given on 26 April 1917. The local tribunal having ‘considered the cases of the butchers decided that this man and another should work for Mr Foggin and remain’ as the Master Butchers in Thornaby were few to satisfy the requirements of the people. ’The military representative appealed this case and another on the grounds that they were fit for military service, the youngest of nine butchers and this man was class A. He thought that if they went there would be sufficient butchers to carry on the trade of the town.
