TitleWWI Appeal Tribunal papers: R M Higgin
DescriptionNorth Riding appeal tribunal number: 3710
Appeal against conscription of: R M Higgin
Age: 28
Address: 39, Oxford Rd., Thornaby
Occupation: Master Butcher
Local tribunal: Thornaby on Tees Urban District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Walter H Mills, Military Representative
Summary of case: The military representative stated that at a recent meeting of the local tribunal all the butchers of Thornaby on Tees holding exemption were reviewed by himself. These two men in whose cases he was appealing were the youngest of nine men before the tribunal and received exemption on condition they assist one of the other butchers from whose service a man was taken. They are both fit for general service and he thought if they were taken for service the sufficient number of butchers would be left to carry on trade. The local tribunal had looked at this case twice and stated that it was necessary to grant conditional exemption as ‘the Master Butchers in Thornaby were few to satisfy the requirements of the people’.
