Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested

Appellant: Kendall Fell, Grocer and Provision Merchant.
Summary of case: Local tribunal dealt with three appeals, thrice giving him temporary exemptions but on the last occasion the military review led to exemption not being granted and any existing exemptions withdrawn. His case was that as a grocer and provisions proprietor he was in a reserved occupation and he supplied the officer's mess, the school of musketry and a large number of monthly and weekly accounts. Furthermore his wife has no training in the business side of management and his turnover demands this. It is impossible in the present conditions to sell the business. In his appeal to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal he reiterates the position of his business and added that since October 1916 he has been working on munitions and is still so employed, attending to his business at nights and weekends and has been doing considerable business with the military representatives.
