Summary of case: Richardson had previously been granted a certificate of exemption. The military representative, Mr. Kitching, appealed and the certificate was withdrawn and the man not to be called up till 1 Jun 1917. Richardson’s employer, A. J. Dorman, appealed against this decision saying Richardson was the only competent man available to maintain the 16 horses in the stables. In their reasons for their decision, the local tribunal thought it was no longer in the national interest to retain him as the horses were for hunting and not employed in agriculture and Richardson was fit for general service.
