Summary of case: Following an application by Josiah Craythorne, employer farming mixed arable land. Craythorne’s father was incapacitated and his wife had been admitted to York Asylum. Conditional exemption had been granted by the local tribunal. In their reasons for their decision the local tribunal stated that due to shortage of labour and the 'supreme necessity of increasing food production' Craythorne should be retained in present employment until a satisfactory substitute found. But military representative appealed against this decision as Craythorne had been passed fit for General Service and conditional exemption should be subject to man being substituted by a man in lower category.
