Summary of case: The local tribunal did not accept that he was indispensable to the business, feeling that an older man could replace him. Lockwood appealed against this stating: ‘Wife bedridden, invalid, suffering from myxoedema and must have constant attendance. Volunteered for munitions and national service, on account of the attitude shown by my current employer, with the object of being placed near home, as my wife cannot possibly be left, she being rejected by the hospital as incurable, and having to pay a woman to attend to her during the day.’ An appeal to the central tribunal was submitted which stated: ‘Mr A M Hall, local military representative made an untruthful statement which did maliciously prejudice my case at the Appeal Tribunal.’ Leave to appeal to Central Tribunal was refused.
