Summary of case: The local tribunal allowed exemption to 14 May 1917 as “other help on the farm was not efficient”. A letter from Veale’s employer stated that he had left his employment on 28 April and gone to his wife's parents in Bishop Auckland: “he had no work to go to”. The military representative’s appeal stated: ‘That there is sufficient labour on the farm without him. The arm is 90 acres, 50 arable and there are 14 cows to milk. The staff besides Veale consists of the farmer, J Thurlow, aged 53: F Thurlow aged 17 and a lad of 14.’
