Summary of case: John Warrener was the only male in the office and in sole charge of the Common Law and County Court practice. It was agreed if his employer gave all his time to the business in York then Warrener would be less necessary. His employer was also assisting in his brother's business in Leeds. The military Representative appealed against the exemption to 1 Aug 1917 granted by the local tribunal: ‘There is no justification for the retention of this man in civil employment of the kind on which he is engaged. The employer is admittedly spending a good deal of his time away from his own business to assist the similar business in Leeds, and if the employer confines himself more to his own business the clerk can be released. In any case regard being had to the character of the work performed, the clerk ought to join the army, even if this involves the employer in financial loss.’
