They had applied for exemptions for three men and been allowed two - a confidential clerk and Dandy. In September 1916 Dandy was given conditional exemption, which was varied to 20 Sept 1917. He had charge of 23 girls and the employers claimed that his work could not be done by a woman or a man inexperienced in the business. They cited Lord Derby on the need for exemptions for responsible men in large businesses and forecast chaos if Dandy were taken. However, the military representative cited Circular R114, as Dandy was under 31 and passed A, and therefore should be called up.
