Summary of case: Harrison was the only competent baker left to the business, the other two having enlisted. He was employed full-time in making bread for supply to several shops, making 40 to 50 stones of flour into bread on week days and 70 to 80 stones on Saturdays. He had been passed fit A1, but since his application to the local tribunal he had been examined by a local doctor whose certificate stated that he was suffering from valvular [sic] disease of the heart and neuritis of the right arm and shoulder. In March 1916 the York City tribunal gave him conditional exemption whilst in present occupation; this was withdrawn in April 1917, with an agreed delay until 24 May 1917. In their reasons for decision, the local tribunal stated that the occupation was not certified, and the appellant had had over a year to train a woman or man ineligible for service for the work.
