Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3532 Appeal against conscription of: Rowland Hide Age: 29 Address: 2 Railway Street, York Occupation: Dentist Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship Appellant: Henry Tolson, Military Representative Summary of case: Hide was an unregistered dentist with his own practice in York, built up over 6 years. He claimed exemption on grounds of financial hardship. On 1 Sept 1916 the local tribunal granted conditional exemption whilst in present occupation, but on 24 April 1917 the certificate was withdrawn and varied to 20 Sept 1917. The Military Representative appealed against the decision of the local tribunal stating that Hide was 31 and passed as B1, there was no reason why he should not be called up. Subsequent paperwork shows that Hide unsuccessfully applied for leave to appeal to the Central Tribunal, one of his grounds being that he had several patients whose teeth had been extracted but not yet replaced. He also detailed other dentists who had been exempted. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 7 May 1917. Allowed. Certificate to be cancelled but not to be called up before 1 Jun 1917. Military appeal |
