Summary of case: Coward applied on the grounds that Taylor was the last man left to them who could run the machines. Three of Taylor's sons were serving, two in hospital and one so badly wounded that he was unlikely to be of further use to the army. Taylor was not to be called up until 31 March 1917 on the understanding that the injured son could substitute for him at work. However, on 12 April 1917 the North Riding Appeal Tribunal clerk wrote to the military representative in York that the injured son was back in the army, and that the North Riding Appeal Tribunal had decided to rehear the case.
