Summary of case: Hetherton (jnr) is the manager and only male person in the offices of these two insurance companies. He had specialised knowledge and long experience in the insurance business, and was solely responsible for claims submitted and other matters. He had joined York Volunteer Corps, and had been qualifying for Home Defence, both voluntarily. On 2 Jan 1917 he had been granted conditional exemption by the local tribunal but this was varied on 24 April 1917 to a temporary certificate until 6 July 1917, to allow his employers time to replace him.
