Summary of case: ‘I shall be 67 next month and my son is now the only man I have. Before the war I regularly employed two other men and an apprentice, and often employed casual labour in addition. I do all the repair work to the farmhouse s and buildings and cottages on the Topcliffe Estate and in addition do a great deal of repair work in the district. The only other builder in the district is my brother who is 65 years of age. On account of my health and my age it is impossible for me to carry on the work by myself and this man is indispensable for the carrying on of the business.’
