Summary of Case: ‘It is a bound apprentice with government indentures for three years fulfilled and three years still to fulfil his apprenticeship and it means a loss of £300 to me (his employer) if taken away, who am not in a position to lose such a sum. I have sacrificed agreed deal since the war started, have lost two men and cannot replace them. He is the only help I have and all my work is purely agricultural with heavy weights to lift, impossible for one man to attempt. I have a mill and grind 60 bags of meal a week for the farmers round and if the boy is taken away the milling will have to stop that means twelve farmers sending a man, a horse, and a cart to Stokesley, taking half a day per week, where about half an hour at my place suffices.’
