Summary of Case: ‘I carry on a butchery business entirely myself and do my own slaughtering. My turnover averages £80 per week. I rent 20 acres of land (61/2 acres arable) and my livestock consists of three milk cows , three feeding beasts, two horses, 13 pigs (including five breed sows) and 200 head of poultry. My outstanding debts are about £500.’ The initial decision was later overturned as Carr’s circumstances changed and his brother was called up on 26 August. The tribunal decided to wait and see what happened to Car’s brother and gave him exemption until 31 Mar 1917.
