Hughes and Goodall both worked for Birdsall, Cross and Black. The firm staffing had been reduced from 12 male clerks and two typists to these two senior male clerks. One was attached to the police court. The firm also has two boys and two lady typists and two temporary lady clerks employed. The firm pays allowances to two of the families where the fathers have been called up. The local tribunal adjourned the appeal for a medical examination. Hughes was granted exemption conditional on remaining in the same employment.
