Summary of Case: The appeals for Hughes and Goodall [NRCC/CL 9/1/3413 and NRCC/CL 9/1/3414] were heard together. Hughes and Goodall both worked for Birdsall, Cross and Black. The firm staffing had been reduced from 12 male clerks and two typists to these two senior male clerks. One was attached to the police court. The firm also has two boys and two lady typists and two temporary lady clerks employed. The firm pays allowances to two of the families where the fathers have been called up. The local tribunal adjourned the appeal for a medical examination. Hughes was granted exemption conditional on remaining in the same employment. The reasons for the local tribunal decision state,’ The tribunal have no hesitation in saying that it is in the national interests that these men should remain where they are.’ The military representative appealed against this decision.
