Summary of Case: As well as his business, Dean has a clothing club at 1 shilling per week. He is £160 ‘out’. If he is called to the colours it will mean serious hardship for his wife and five children. He would be ruined after 25 years of saving. His baby twins are visited constantly by the doctor at considerable expense and he also suffers from heart failure himself and nervous debility. The military representative appeal against the decision of the local tribunal which gave Dean three months to make arrangements. The military representative also states that ‘there are too many grocers in Whitby.’
