Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3400 Appeal against conscription of: John Lake Age: Not stated Address: 29 St. Thomas Street, Scarborough Occupation: Bootmaker Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: Not stated Appellant: John Lake Summary of case: I am in business in Scarbro [sic] as a bootmaker and repairer at 36 St. Thomas St., and I am engaged on Army repairs having done over 3,000 pairs. Since losing my man last July, I have had to carry on the Army work and private work alone, which is work enough for two men. I had machinery put in to enable me to do this work having to get permission from the Ministry to do so. I have had to work long hours to get through the work from 7am. until 9 or 10 pm. 6 days a week. My mother is suffering from consumption of the lungs and a sister has Consumption of the kidneys and the doctors say that neither will regain their health. My mothers sister having died of consumption some time ago and left 4 children the eldest 12 years old and the youngest 6, my mother took them to look after their father who is a labourer in Manchester paying her 12/- a week to keep and clothe them I myself keep their boots in repairs free of charge and pay my mother a 1£ a week and help in many other ways. Before the War I lost a brother in consumption and my only remaining brother who was single and 38 years of aged was killed in France. If you come to the decision that my case is not deserving of conditional exemption I ask you for a little more time in which to leave my business in a satisfactory condition as I think I could obtain someone to keep it going but should have to teach them to use the machinery and a little more time would enable me to square up my accounts.
