Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3398 Appeal against conscription of: William Laurence Kidd Age: 18 Address: 49 St. Johns Road, Scarborough Occupation: Coal Carman Local tribunal: Scarborough Borough Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation and d) serious hardship Appellant: W.M. Kidd father and employer Summary of case: This man in respect of whom the appeal is made has been employed by the appellant his father in the appellants coal business since he was 13 ½ years of age. Before the War, the Appellant had two men, both of whom are now in the Army, and this youth; now he only has this youth and a boy of 17 who helps to fill coal. He sells about 50 or 60 tons of coal per week and keeps two horses. His customers are chiefly in Falsgrave and the East Ward; the situation and the narrowness of the access to the houses in the latter makes delivering there very difficult. The appellant has enquired at the Employment Exchange and is advertising bus is unable to get a substitute. He has had his present business for 28 years, but he cannot carry it on without sufficient men. It is submitted that the supply of coal is in the National Interest; that this man is at present necessary to the supply and that serious hardship would be caused to the appellant if he were taken for military service. The appellants application was refused by the local tribunal who however requested the Military authorities not to call the man up before 3 May. The appellant has a mare due to foal about 21 May and requests that his son may remain to assist him until the as it is necessary for one person to attend to the business and another to see to the mare.
