Summary of case: The appellant commenced business at the above address in 1910 and up to the commencement of War he more than paid his way. The immediate effect of the War was that for a considerable time he carried on business at a loss with the result that he now owes £50, out of £80 he borrowed to commence business; £41 for rent to 6th Apr 1917 and £20 for rates to March 1917. The business is now recovering and he is paying off his liabilities. He has no assistant but his wife helps him in the business. If he had to go into the Army the business could not be sold but would have to be closed and he would lose his business and connection which have taken him 6 years to work up. He would also remain saddled with the debts mentioned above, with no means to discharge them. There is only one other business of the same kind on the South Cliff and it does a different class of trade. In addition to supporting his wife and child, his wife’s mother, a widow of 60, is dependent on him and he makes a weekly allowance to his own mother who is also a widow.
