Summary of case: Gentleman, my son for whom I appeal is really indispensable. He is 34 year of age. He has worked regularly on the farm since he was 15 years of age. And from 18 years of age he managed [self-binder], drills and other machinery. He is a regular horseman, stacker and thatcher, also hedges. Indeed with the exception of a small 16 year old boy he has had full management and work of the farm since last harvest, until Monday when he got a soldier to assist him. The farm is 125 acres, 65 of which is arable of a rather strong nature, and requires a good deal of working, we have at the present time 5 working horses and one young one, 32 beasts etc. We have fed (or are feeding) during winter months 20b beasts. This has been his work too, you may ask gentleman, what I have been doing, I must confess not very much, I shall be 70 years old in May, and during the last 5 years have suffered severely from rheumatism, and can only hobble about, and do little jobs, such as caking beasts etc. I have now ordered 6 tons of tillage for corn, and shall require 4 tons for roots, but if you take my son this will have to be cancelled, for I can’t get a man to sow it. My son I beg of you gentleman, to give my appeal a favourable consideration.
