Summary of case: See previous Case No.1894 decided 31 Oct 1916 – I appeal for a renewal of exemption granted by the Appeal Tribunal on grounds “d”. I am Master of a large working business of 30 years standing, extending from Hawes to Bedale, and which has never employed less than 3 men and as many as 8 in Summer. One of my men (my nephew) is in France, one class “C” and the other is an aged man. I do all the Signwriting except boards, coffin plates, and Schools etc, for the district. I am in the middle of the busy season. The whole of my life’s saving is in the business. I have at least £300 of stock which would spoil if I was taken. Being a working business I have a large amount of money out. The business would have to close down if I was taken. I have a wife, two young children and a delicate Aunt over 60 dependent on me. I was passed for garrison duty only. I suffer from a cardiac heart, and I have been treated for same by two Doctors. I served 16 years in the Volunteers and offered twice for the Boar War, but was rejected. I am a Special Constable and Motor Cyclist. I am 40 years of age on 25th Apr. I was granted a Condition of Exemption at Leyburn. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/840, NRCC/CL 9/1/1894, NRCC/CL 9/1/4190, NRCC/CL 9/1/4955, NRCC/CL 9/1/5686]
