Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3379 Appeal against conscription of: Ernest Clement Elgie Age: 25 Address: Thorngill, Middleham Occupation: Farm Man Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship Appellant: Thomas Conner, farmer and employer Summary of case: Almost indispensable as either he or myself has to attend to my invalid son, 24, everything has to be done for him as he is quite helpless to anything for himself, he is obliged to have injection at every [motion] to be helped out of his carriage onto the floor and back again and he has great objections to strangers that he is used to the man as he has attended to him for several years. The man also does all the other work on the place, 4 cows and other cattle, 10 ewes and lambs besides 6 horses he also takes milk round in the neighbourhood. I have not gone into detail in other appeals before about the invalid but I now think it is necessary to do so. My 3 sons have all joined over nearly 2 years and the other came to Teneriffe [sic] to join 15 months ago, an apprentice I had has also joined a few weeks ago. I am now left with the only man and I am 66 years old. The man also has 3 brothers joined. If I got exemption for the man until the end of July, I should be satisfied as I have 25 acres of grass to cut and got my youngest son, 15, will be home about August for food and he could do a good deal for the invalid as the sons have always helped with him until the War and understand him. Supporting evidence: No Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 14 Apr 1917 Appeal allowed Military appeal Certificate to be cancelled. |
