Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Services Act

Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative
Summary of case: This man was given exemption until a suitable substitute was provided, the employer his father refused, however, to accept a substitute when offered stating that he required a man to do his buying and selling and also a weeksÂ’ trial. I therefore reviewed his certificate with the object of having it altered to a temporary exemption in order that he should find a substitute. The Local Tribunal dismissed my application, stating that they were satisfied that the man offered was suitable, that therefore Edwin Lawson was now available for service. This does not appear clear to me as the original exemption still stands I therefore ask for the necessary alteration in the certificate. The man offered has since been placed as a substitute on a similar farm only larger acreage where he has given every satisfaction. Mr Lawson has other sons whom he could bring home.
