Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3354 Appeal against conscription of: Richard Cowper Harling Age: 28 Address: Royal Oak Hotel, Goodramgate, York Occupation: Hotel manager Local tribunal: York City Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation, d) serious hardship Appellant: Richard C Harling Summary of case: Richard manages the business but is not the licensee. His brother enlisted some time ago. There is quite a lot of heavy work to do which his mother could not possibly manage. He has already had two short exemptions. He was originally classified for sedentary work only, then for general service. There is a report from an ear surgeon stating that Richard has chronic inflammation of the left middle ear and that he considers him unfit for any service involving exposure and that to pass him as fit for general service is 'preposterous'. Richard asked to be sent on munition work or into a clerical department as long as he could manage the hotel in the evenings and weekends. The Tribunal were not willing to do this. A special Medical Board passed him for C.1. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/2985] Supporting evidence: Yes Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 10 Apr 1917. Dismissed. |
