Summary of case: William Aconley's father agreed to plough up 10 additional acres of land if he could retain his son. Papers were issued to William Aconley requiring him to be medically examined which he refused on the grounds of Conscientious Objection. No mention had been made of his views to the Local or Appeal Tribunals and therefore could not be allowed. His father begged to allow his son further exemption as he was a very backward in the farm work. It was agreed to postpone calling his son up until 31 July and he signed an undertaking to report himself for service on that date without any further trouble. His father lodged a further appeal. The Military Representative only received notice of this on the date of the case which was too late to take any action. There was considerable confusion, the Military Representative considered whether to take the man by force as they would be up against the dales people. William Aconley was therefore instructed to attend the Appeal Tribunal on 7 May 1917. The local tribunal granted him exemption until 31 July 1917. The recruiting officer appealed against this decision. [See also NRCC/CL 9/1/2956]
