Summary of case: Alf Fowles states he has four sons and three are already serving, Jack is necessary to carry on his business as a tailor. The cutting room is on the first floor and the shop on the ground floor and Alf cannot be up and down stairs. Eric deals with the customers and runs the business. He is indispensable to the continuance of the business. Military Representative supported a conditional exemption granted by the local tribunal. However, when this came up for review the military representative asked for the withdrawal of the certificate and ‘the tribunal had no alternative but to withdraw the exemption – they do not consider that any young man of 18 should be sewing in a tailor and drapers shop when he is fit for general service.’
