Summary of case: Trattles works the business as a druggist and sub-postmaster singlehandedly. He has three children under 10 years old. 13 years ago he had an accident and had the inner cartilage of his left knee removed and he still suffers ‘considerably’ in damp weather. The local tribunal adjourned his original appeal until he had been examined by the Central Medical Board, who passed him Bi. Following this they decided that his work with the post-office and with the Skinningrove Iron Company ‘will be of greater national importance than if he joined the Army.’ The military representative disagreed and appealed against their decision: ‘That it is expedient in the national interest that this man should join the Army instead of remaining in his present employment.’
