Description | North Riding appeal tribunal number: 3291 Appeal against conscription of: George Ward Age: 32 Address: High Street, Staithes Occupation: Milk dealer Local tribunal: Hinderwell Urban District Council Central tribunal: No Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act Grounds for appeal: a) continue in current occupation Appellant: George Ward Summary of case: I am a cow keeper and milk seller in business on my own account at Staithes. I purchased same for upwards of £200 from the previous owner. I am the tenant of 16½ acres of land and also have a Shop in Staithes The rent of both these are over £70 per annum. I have 8 milking cows and two other beasts and have a milk round which means 200 calls daily my land is ¾ of a mile from my house and the road to same is rough. All the milk has to be carried by hand from the cow byre and this is heavy work and cannot be done by a woman or boys. Again, Staithes is very hilly and there are very bad roads to get to my customers houses. In the winter time my stock has to be housed this means additional work. My wife is unable to do the work through ill health. I have three children aged eight, six and three years, the eldest is a cripple. I am single handed in the business except for a small school boy who helps me to carry my milk. My business is of national importance as I am producing and distribution most necessary food stuff and I therefore apply for exemption.
