Summary of case: The local tribunal had exempted Hanley until Jan 1917. Hanley had been employed by Pease and Partners Ltd. Blast Furnaces, Middlesbrough. Current employer is Chemical Works, late H & E Albert where he is a mill feeder of the blast furnaces making artificial manure (basic slag). It is exceptionally heavy work and some parts cannot be done by female labour. The case papers include a letter to H W Jarvis, Chemical Works, Middlesbrough from the Ministry of Munitions of War, Explosives Department signed H G Hall of the fertiliser section: ‘Since their cases were previously under consideration the food production question has become more urgent and this department is therefore most anxious that every available man should be used to increase the output of fertilisers.’’ There are three cases which the North Riding Appeal Tribunal considered together.
