Summary of case: Thomas Jones was employed as a clerk at Messrs Cookes in York. The firm was involved in the production of munitions and initially Jones was a 'badged' man. He surrendered his badged status, was called up for medical examination but refused to attend. He applied for exemption on grounds of conscientious objection, though on political rather than religious grounds. The appeal tribunal found in his favour and exempted him providing he engaged in work of national importance (in this case, farmwork). William H Cooper Horsfall, the Military Representative, put an appeal in to the Central Tribunal questioning the genuineness of JonesÂ’ conscientious objection as he had been working in a munitions factory. This was refused by the North Riding Appeal Tribunal.
Supporting evidence: Yes
Date and decision of North Riding Appeal Tribunal: 22 Mar 1917. Allowed exemption from combatant service provided applicant takes up work of national importance to be approved by appeal tribunal.
