Summary of case: Young is employed as a law clerk. There are four members of his family currently serving and one member killed in action. Young's mother is an invalid with a weak heart. Her house suffered in the Zeppelin raid on York and her nerves are shattered to the extent that she is not able to look after herself or her daughter. Crombie & Sons have lost several men to the army, they have taken on the work of another law firm in town but this firm has also lost staff to the army. They cannot afford to spare Young.
