Summary of case: May is a plumber who maintains the fresh water supplies for Leyburn and district. He was the sole contractor when the system was changed from gravity to symphonic supply. There is only one other plumber in Leyburn. Additionally he makes and repairs dairy utensils for farmers and milk dealers. He was granted a temporary exemption until 16 Feb 1917 by the local tribunal, which was extended to 1 June 1917. The military representative appealed against this decision: ‘That it is inexpedient in the national interest to and considering the urgent need of men for military service and the category in which he is passed that he should be retained in his present occupation.’
