Summary of case: Scaife ran his business with the help of a fourteen year old boy. His brother who has also worked in the business has been called up. Scaife worked as a special constable. He had run the business for eight years and in his absence the business would close, leaving him without a livelihood after the war, he also suffered from eczema. He made reference to an article in the local Gazette where a man in a similar position was granted an exemption. The appeal was refused by the North Riding Tribunal and reduced to 31 May 1917 with no leave to appeal.
