Summary of case: As well as tobacconist, Woodhouse also ran a busy window cleaning business. When he attested in 1915 he had been rejected for service on medical grounds, chronic asthma, but, after the implementation of the Military Service Act, they re-categorised him. Woodhouse had been given time to wind up his business, to 14 Mar 1917. The local tribunal justified their decision: “Window Cleaning in the present state of the Country is not an essential occupation.” and that he had had enough time to wind up his business.
