Summary of case: In June 1916 the local tribunal had granted exemption on condition he remain in his present occupation and join the Voluntary Training Corps. [VTC] However the military representative sought a review because he said Trenholm had not complied with the conditions set out in his Certificate of Exemption and the exemption was withdrawn on 2 Feb 1917. The following day Trenholm appealed to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal saying he had not attended VTC because he had a large area to farm, had lost one of his staff to the military and his wife was ill with blood poisoning. Further, the VTC had not taken place at Egton since Oct 1916 meaning he had to walk two miles there and two miles back to catch a train to the training sessions.
