Lownsbrough's father William Lownsbrough appealed against their decision, saying his son was necessary for his farm. The local tribunal reasoned that Francis Lownsbrough only recently started work on the farm, having been apprenticed to a grocer and working in a grocer's shop, and dismissed the appeal. After the North Riding Appeal tribunal decision, William Lownsbrough wrote to ask for the case to be reheard but the Clerk of the Appeal Tribunal wrote on 30 March 1917 to refuse this request.
