Age: 32
Address: c/o Mr P Cadman, Rock House, Troutsdale
Occupation: Farm foreman
Local tribunal: Scarborough Rural District Council

Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Peter Cadman, employer
Summary of case: In Mar 1916 the local tribunal granted Cockerill an exemption conditional upon his remaining in agricultural employment. The military representative then appealed, stating “notwithstanding the man's principal and usual occupation is one of the certified occupations it is no longer necessary in the national interest that he should continue in civil employment”; Cockerill's certificate was withdrawn at the local tribunal on 9 Fen 1917, “not to be called up until 1 month has expired”. Cockerill's employer then appealed to the Appeal Tribunal, which considered that the farm was considerably over-staffed compared with any other farm in the neighbourhood. The local tribunal said that, if Cadman could release two of his farm staff then it might be reasonable for him to retain Cockerill
