Local tribunal: Whitby Urban District Council
Central tribunal: No
Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Attested
Grounds for appeal: Not stated
Appellant: Graham Craig, Military Representative
Summary of case: The local tribunal granted Burnett a conditional exemption as long as he stayed in his current occupation and did five hours per day farming for his brother and joined the Volunteer Training Corps. He had a previous appeal which was postponed on medical grounds. The military representative objected stating that it is not in the national interest for Burnett to remain in his present occupation. The local tribunal justified their decision and refer to the Special Report made by the Whitby Butchers Association which states that the industry is in dire states as so many butchers and slaughterman have been called up. They are asking that those remaining should be spared, and therefore the local tribunal had given Burnett a certificate of exemption. Craig appealed against the decision of the local tribunal.
