Summary of case: The appellant is the employer and proprietor of a boat building business in addition to being a licensed victualler. He is unable to attend to part of his business and his son (the appellant) who is a competent boat builder carries out this work. He also repairs jetties for the corporation and takes officials for surveying on the river. One son is already serving and the only other employees are 'cripples'. The appellant is also in possession of a set of grappling irons and assists the police regularly, from his boats, 'in finding persons who have been drowned'. The appellant wishes it known that there is insanity in the family.
