Summary of case: Rowntrees contended at the York City Tribunal hearing that White was essential to the well-being of their workforce, and quoted a decision of the Central Tribunal in June 1916 that dentists and their mechanics should be seriously considered for exemption, depending on local availability. The local tribunal thought that his technical training would be useful in the Army and the company should if necessary suspend its dental department during the war. Evans was originally rejected on medical grounds, being deaf, flat-footed and stiff-jointed, but a medical board in Nov 1916 passed him B2. The employers appealed against these decisions.[See also NRCC/CL 9/1/2993]
