Summary of case: This is the fourth appeal for this man, the first in June 1916 being made by his employers and subsequent ones in August and October 1916 by Sweeting himself, on the grounds of personal hardship. These appeals resulted in temporary exemptions of two, two and three months. On 23 Jan 1917 the local tribunal decided that he should join up and his wife and mother should arrange to live together to lower their living expenses. In the appeal to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal he details his wife's and mother's states of health and mentions three unpaid doctor's bills, following four family deaths including his own infant son leaving him in a "very hard and unenviable" domestic position.
