Summary of case: He applied for exemption on the grounds that he is the “last man” at the market garden but his application was dismissed by the local tribunal. He told the North Riding Appeal Tribunal that he also had a newspaper business but was willing to give up his present application to go into munitions work or other work of national importance. His appeal was dismissed. However, a letter dated 3 Mar 1917 from the Cleveland Magnesite and Refractory Company Limited sent the call up notice back to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal stating that Sam Bartram was employed by them and that they had “instructions from the Ministry of Munitions not to allow any of our men to join the Colours”.
