Summary of case: He is engaged in work maintaining motors for the GPO and local doctors and his employer, T Smirthwaite, has been unable to find a substitute. The local tribunal granted him exemption until 1 Jan 1917, which was then extended to 30 April or until a substitute could be found. On 12 Feb T Smirthwaite wrote to the tribunal to say that he had contracted pneumonia and asking for an adjournment. On 13 Mar John Smirthwaite wrote to say that Mr T Smirthwaite had died and that he had taken charge of the business. The military representative said that he could be substituted and should be called up immediately.
