However, his primary objection was on grounds of conscience; he spoke at the local tribunal in a perfervid manner as to his religious convictions and quoted several texts from the New Testament in support of his views. Major Herbert wrote Do not consider this man should have absolute exemption from military service. His main objection was to compulsory service in any form.
