Summary of case: Trueman is the sole proprietor of the Golden Lion Hotel in Leyburn. If he is called up his wife, who is in a delicate state of health, cannot manage. Trueman does not have any family to help in the business. He has a lease which has 7 years to run and if he were to join the army he would not be able to pay the lease. The military representative states that Trueman has had two previous exemptions of six months and there does not seem to be enough evidence to support the claim that serious hardship would ensue if Trueman went into the army. Mr J C Winn of The Grange, Aysgarth has been making enquiries of the Civil Liabilities Committee to see what compensation Trueman would get if he joined the army. These letters are dates 7 and 13 March, with a reply to Mr Winn from Mr Thornley, Clerk to the North Riding Appeal Tribunal.
