Age: 34
Address: Leyburn
Occupation: Joiner, Sawyer, Manager and Secretary to the Wensleydale Gas and Electricity Co.
Local tribunal: Leyburn Rural District Council

Military Service Act 1916 or Attested: Military Service Act
Grounds for appeal: d) serious hardship
Appellant: Frederick Riddell, Military Representative
Summary of case: Chapels is the only full term experienced man who understands the practical running of the machinery in the joinery businesses. The six regular staff of joiners have all gone to the army and he is the only full time man employed, apart from one man involved with the farm work and the shop. If Chapels is called to the colours it would cause severe financial loss. ‘He is also Manager, meter indexer and electrician and Secretary for the Wensleydale Gas and Electricity Company Ltd. The local tribunal gave Chapels a temporary exemption to 15 April 1917. The military representative appeals against this as he has already been granted exemption and states that ‘no special extraordinary hardship is shown to ensue’ if Chapels joins the army.
