Summary of case: Craddock was brought up by Emmitt, who is 92, and his grandfather from the age of 13. He is employed as the only man working on the 21 acres of farmland Emmitt has. He is also the only general carter in the village. Emmitt has a 56 year old daughter who has been in bed for 16 years. A substitute would be of no use to Ann Emmitt as there are too many difficulties to overcome in order to have an honourable livelihood.
